About Us

Who We Are?

The Nigerian Institution of Water Engineers (NIWE) is a division of The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) whose objective among others is to serve as an umbrella body for Engineers from water related discipline, and those working in the Water Industry to ensure the effective utilization of human and material resources for the Professional Development and competence of its members through capacity building, public awareness, research in water and sanitation management.

The year in view started with the NIWE 2018 International Conference/AGM scheduled for the ancient City of Abeokuta, Ogun State. Several papers were presented during the conference of which some papers that meets international standard were published in the first edition of NIWE National Journal with ISSN No and also at the NIWE web-site (www.niwe.org.ng)

There have been substantial achievements recorded in the area of Professional Development of Members which was achieved through the platform of Technical Presentations at the Chapter’s level. During the Technical Presentation at the Chapter’s monthly general meetings, members of the Division were able to discuss and interact effectively on numerous issues confronting Nigeria.

The Division also participated in the World Water Day Celebration in collaboration with FCT Water Board where NIWE donated 10,000ltrs Water Storage tanks to IDP Camp, DURUMI, Abuja including sensitizing them on the “Hand Washing technique”. This is in line with the theme of the year “leaving no one behind”.

Also, within the year in review, members of the division who were appointed into the NSE Committees, participated actively and made meaningful contribution during the committee meetings.

Part of the activities of the Water Division includes Industrial Visits within and outside the Country as may be convenient for members’ participation. This was to be done on a chapter by chapter basis. However, the economic climate was responsible for the slow pace of this activity.

  1. Members from Abeokuta Chapter paid a courtesy visit to the Production Manager, International Brewery, Ijebu-Ode within the year 2018.
  2. Makurdi Chapter visited five (5) fully automated water producing companies in Benue State viz:
    1. V-Fresh Water Company, Aqua Fresh;
    2. Greater Makurdi Water Works;
    3. and others.

INTERNATIONAL VISITS

In order to acquaint members on inter-boundary waters and other international treaties on water resources, the division periodically embarks on international technical visits. However, the economic situation in the country was a major factor why no such visits was held in recent times.
